How do the adults with autism who live in the communities spend their time?

Adults with autism who live in the communities participate in daily activities of home maintenance, such as cleaning, cooking, landscaping, and once or twice a week, together with the support staff, they go grocery shopping for their meals.

Quality leisure activities are organized according to individual abilities and needs. Creative workshops in the form of art and music workshops and workshops of production of various functional objects are held by an occupational therapist in cooperation with educational rehabilitator and creative arts associates. Local elementary school gave us the opportunity to freely use the school sports hall, so the adults with autism living in the communities have the opportunity to exercise and use recreational resources of local community.

In the spring of 2011 Autism Association Zagreb arranged the garden in the rural area community. Products for this garden supply the communities with food for one part of the year. This is one of the ways that our community-based housing programme is held sustainable.

Those who are included in the community-based housing programme participate in the life of the local community. During holidays and other festive days, adults with autism participate in fairs in the local community with the products they created within the creative workshops.

Family relationships within th ecommunity-based housing programme

We strive to provide regular contact with the family for the adults with autism living in the communities. We use their experience and knowledge of the specifities of their children, so parents can become useful partners and collaborators in the further development of the programme and in the implementation of programme activities as volunteers. In this way they continue to actively participate in the life of their children and help the support staff in raising the quality of the implementation of programme activities and at the end, they help in the improving the quality of life of all adults with autism living in the communities of Autism Association Zagreb.
